What is an in house lawyer

a solicitor employed by an employer that is not a solicitor's firm or an authorised non-SRA firm (in commerce or industry, in central or local government, in the not-for-profit sector, or in a trade union or other association) acts only for the employer, subject to limited exceptions which allow, for instance, a law centre solicitor to act for members of the public; "pure" in-house work, where the solicitor cannot be said to be working for the public or a section of the public, is not affected by the Act; most organisations whose solicitors currently act for sections of the public, such as law centres or insurance companies, will eventually need to be licensed as ABSs under the Act

How much do in house lawyers earn?

The UK's in-house lawyers are the best paid in the world, according to a new survey of in-house salaries.

UK general counsel with legal teams of more than 30 lawyers earn an average of £214,000, just edging out their US counterparts who take an average of $419,000, or £210,703 at current exchange rate levels, according to a survey by recruitment consultants Laurence Simons.

Naveen Tuli, in-house recruitment consultant at Laurence Simons, said the high pay reflected their expanded roles as corporate advisers. "We liken the role to that of consigliere - a trusted adviser separate from the executive council of a business, but with real influence over the individual at the very top."

In-House Solicitors

The UK regional in-house legal market is a buoyant and expanding area of the legal profession. Industries with in-house legal teams are as diverse as aviation, pharmaceutical and fast moving consumer goods. Each in-house solicitor's role will be different, also with a variety of positions offering flexibility of practice and commercial involvement not often found elsewhere. There is of course the added benefit of no time sheets and onerous billing targets.

Many in-house solicitors are expected to make informed commercial decisions based on all of the relevant factors and not just on the letter of the law. As an in-house solicitor you become an integral part of a company's business practices.

Faced with these issues, it is imperative that your consultancy provides you with comprehensive information and analysis of all the opportunities across the in-house law field.
